1. Echoes of the Bay

Echoes of the Bay is HBHCFD's flagship oral history and genealogy project documenting the people, families and communities that shaped Hout Bay.

The project records personal memories, family histories, traditions, photographs, historical documents and community experiences before they disappear forever.

Working alongside elders, families, historians and researchers, the project is creating one of the most comprehensive community heritage archives ever undertaken in Hout Bay.

Echoes of the Bay celebrates the diverse heritage of Hout Bay, including the histories of Indigenous communities, fishing families, harbour communities, descendants of enslaved people, long-standing local families and all those whose lives have contributed to the unique identity of Hout Bay.

Every story matters.

Every generation deserves to know where they come from.

2. Ubuntu Festival

The Ubuntu Festival is HBHCFD's annual celebration of community, heritage, diversity and unity.

Inspired by the African philosophy of Ubuntu "I am because we are" the festival brings together people from all backgrounds to celebrate the cultures, traditions, music, food, languages, history and creativity that make Hout Bay unique.

The festival aims to:

Encourage intergenerational learning


Strengthen community pride and belonging


Promote indigenous knowledge and living heritage


Celebrate Cape Town’s cultural diversity


Promote social cohesion and reconciliation


Showcase local artists, performers and storytellers


Support local entrepreneurs and community organisations


Create opportunities for youth participation
